I tested five ways to peel garlic fast, jar shakes, the knife smack, and the hot-water soak that wins.

The problem
Peeling garlic clove by clove is slow. I ranked five faster methods from worst to best.
The fix
5. **The jar shake.** Cloves in a jar with a lid, shake hard. Ranked worst.
4. **Jar shake with water.** Same trick with some water added, no change.
3. **Jar shake, stems cut off.** Better, but I still had to peel a few by hand.
2. **The knife smack.** My usual go-to: smack the clove with the flat of a paring knife. It's peeled, but it's also crushed.
1. **Hot-water soak.** Soak the cloves for 30 seconds in hot water and the peel comes off like butter.
